The Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida is home to some of the most significant NASCAR races there. This is a 2.5 mile track and seats fans be 168,000. Other racing associations share the track too, so it is not only a center of NASCAR. It is home to the career of most Americans know it has existed for so long: the Daytona 500. In 2008, the 50th annual NEXTEL Cup Daytona 500 race will take place. The Daytona 500 is a 500-mile race that consists of 200 laps. This race will begin NASCAR season on February 17. The winner of the Daytona 500 trophy was received by Harley J. Earl. Harley J. Earl was an automobile designer who served as commissioner NASCAR second. The Harley J. Earl Trophy will be plated in gold instead of silver for the 2008 campaign.
The Daytona 500 has a unique qualifying procedure. The first 35 teams in the competition last year are automatically qualified to compete in today's race Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. There is 150 kilometers of qualifying races held the week before the big race and the two best drivers of the titles will be added to the 35. Other top qualifiers will fill the remaining seats to 43 and former NASCAR champions without a place will be given priority.
The Daytona International Speedway has seen its share of exciting wins through its history. For example, take the Daytona 500 victory in 1976 when David Pearson was just over to the King of Racing Richard Petty. The two actually wrecked on their darts to the end and the two cars came on tour. Richard Petty's car stalled when he entered the box. Pearson got his car to the finish line at 30 mph. All this happened little enthusiasm to 20 meters from the finish line.
The Daytona 500 has had its share of tragedies. In 2001, Dale Earnhardt was killed in an accident on the last lap of the last lap. Dale Earnhardt had won on this track 34 times.
